May 5th is the fourth and last national holiday that make up the Golden Week Holiday called kodomo no hi. It is a day to celebrate children and to wish for their happiness and success. It was originally know as Boy’s Day and is still considered more of a celebration for boys instead of girls. Girls have their own day on March 3rd, but it’s not a national holiday.
Many families raise koinobori which are carp shaped flags. The carp represents strength and power. One carp for each child (boy).

May 4th is the third of four national holidays that make up the Golden Week Holiday called midori no hi. This holiday was orginally on April 29th and was to celebrate the birthday of Emperor Hirohito. The holiday had always been controversial and after his death in 1989 the holiday was renamed Green(ery) Day. Even though the name and date changed, it is still a way to honor Emperor Hirohito because he was very interested in nature, plants, and marine biology.
It’s also a day to enjoy nature and think about the environment. In my city there was a samba festival with music and dancing in the streets all day. The dancers were barely clothed so I guess it fit with the nature theme.

May 3rd is the second of four national holidays that make up the Golden Week Holiday called kenpo kinenbi. It’s a day to commemorate the Constitution of Japan that took effect on this day in 1947.
The Japanese Constitution was created during the Allied Occupation after World War II. It replaced the imperial system of rule with a form of liberal democracy.

This year on April 29th a new national holiday called showa no hi starts the beginning of the Golden Week holiday in Japan.
The holiday is to honor the former Emperor Hirohito who reign from 1926-1989. This period was given the name Showa which means period of enlightened peace. It is also meant to to be a day to reflect on the Showa period and to think about Japan’s future. The holiday is a bit controversial for some due to Japans actions in Asia and in World War II during this time.
I was born in Showa 41.

There are 14 national holidays in Japan and four of them fall within in the same week which is know in Japan as Golden Week. Many people combine the national holidays with a few paid days off to travel overseas and througout Japan. This year the holidays fall on Sunday which makes Monday a day off, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The four national holidays are:
April 29th 昭和の日(showa no hi)-Showa Day
May 3th 憲法記念日(kinpo kinenbi)-Constitution Day
May 4th みどりの日(midori no hi)-Greenery Day
May 5th こどもの日(kodomo no hi)-Childrens Day

My production and motivation level has been low the past couple of weeks due to an extremely busy schedule at school and from watching the horrible tragedy last Monday at Virginia Tech. I was glued to the tv from the moment I got home to early in the morning. Being from Virginia, knowing someone who currently goes there, and having been on the Virginia Tech campus many times made me feel more connected to the events that happend. It’s another reminder how quickly our lives can change and how much we need to let the people we care about know that we care about them.
Now on to something better.
Congratulations to two of our listenters, Vince and Jim, for getting selected for the JET program. I hope they have a great experience. Too bad they don’t get to drink champagne in business class like I did, but I’m sure the juice will taste just as sweet in economy. Oh the glory days!
If you or someone you know also got selected for this years JET program please let me know. I would like to keep up with everyone. I want to make this a good resource of information about the program and a place to network.
A couple of people told me they had sent voicemails, but I never got them. I found out the account was closed. Sorry about that! I opened a new account, so please send in your voicemails for the shows. The new number is

I just starting using jaiku. It’s a great place to keep up with what others are doing and to discover some new things. Check it out and add me to see what I’m doing and working on throughout the day.
New shows are on the way so pleased stay tuned!
